What Is a Digital Missionary?

The starting point for everything we do — who digital missionaries are, why the mission field is now digital, and how to take your first step.

Updated June 23, 2026

A missionary crosses a boundary to bring the gospel to people who haven’t heard it. For most of history that boundary was geographic — an ocean, a border, a language line. Today the largest unreached boundary on earth isn’t a place at all. It’s a screen.

A digital missionary is an ordinary believer who crosses that screen on purpose. Not to broadcast at people, but to find them, befriend them, and walk with them toward Jesus in the digital spaces where they already live — the feed, the server, the inbox, the game, the group chat.

The mission field moved. Most of the Church hasn’t.

More than five billion people are online. Every second, hundreds of them type questions like “Is God real?” and “Who is Jesus?” into a search bar. That’s a mission field bigger than any continent — open, searchable, and active twenty-four hours a day.

You don’t need a visa to reach it. You don’t need to raise support for a plane ticket. You need to see the people on the other side of the glass as people, and to take one intentional step toward them.

You’re more qualified than you think

The biggest myth about digital missions is that it’s for the tech-savvy. It isn’t. If you can join a video call and send a message, you already have the tools. The skills that matter most are the old ones: listening, hospitality, patience, prayer, and the willingness to start a real conversation.

That’s the whole idea behind missionary.digital — to find the people God is already stirring to do this, sharpen them, and send them back out stronger.

Take your next step

This guide is the front door. From here, go deeper on whichever part of the mission field is yours:

  • Evangelism — start gospel conversations in someone’s own language.
  • Discipleship — build real community on the platforms people actually use.
  • The de-churched — reach the millions who left church but never left God.
  • Gaming, Recovery, Web3 — go where the culture is being formed right now.

The mission field is open. The only question is whether the workers will show up.

Be part of the next gathering.

missionary.digital 2027 brings these themes — and the people living them out — together, online, from every time zone.
