Reaching the De-Churched

Sociologist Josh Packard — the researcher behind Church Refugees — opened his 2025 session with a distinction that reframes the whole mission field: most people who leave church haven’t left God. They’ve left a model. Reach them on those terms and a closed door becomes an open one.

”Done,” not gone

Leaving church is rarely a single dramatic exit. It’s a slow career of trying to hang on until staying becomes untenable — until someone is simply “done.” Of the tens of millions who’ve walked away, a large share didn’t reject faith. They rejected an institution that stopped feeling trustworthy or personal. They’re still saved, still gifted, still meant for community. They’re just floating.

Trust moved from institutions to relationships

The deepest shift is about trust. People now trust institutions and leaders at strikingly low rates — but they trust someone they personally know at 70–80%. That’s a problem for platforms built on authority and broadcast. It’s an enormous advantage for a digital missionary whose whole method is relationship.

Listen first — it’s your superpower

The single most formative thing you can do for someone’s faith is also the most relational: listen. The de-churched have usually been talked at for years. Gen Z in particular prizes “the person who knows me best” over the biggest expert in the room. A digital missionary is structurally built to be that person — present, patient, and unhurried.

Pastors like Dr. John Harris have built entire online discipleship communities on exactly this insight, reconnecting “church refugees” who’d given up on the building but never on Jesus.

The move: don’t argue people back into a model they already rejected. Build the kind of trusted, listening relationship they left to find — and let that be the doorway home.
